Eternal MMA – Feb 21st 2014

Posted on | Comments Off

I will be going up a weight class in my next fight which will be on Feb 21st on the Gold Coast, QLD Australia on Eternal MMA against Reece McClaren of Kachi MMA. I was offered this fight with a couple weeks notice back in October last year which I tentatively accepted but due to contract commitments could not go through with the fight. When I was offered the same fight again, this time with a bit more notice too, I thought why the hell not. Having come back from training overseas for a few weeks I was in decent shape to get straight into camp to prepare for this fight. Read more…

ONE FC Result

Unfortunately my debut on One FC didn’t go as I’d hoped and came home with a loss via decision. I have to say though that based on the judging criteria that One FC uses whereby the fight is judged as an entirety and not per round, my coach and I thought we should have been given the nod mainly because even though my opponent was on top on the ground for the latter stages of the fight, not much as done on his part and I was more active when I had my chances. But even though I didn’t want the fight to go to the judges, there was not much I could do when you have a world champion BJJ guy laying on top of you – It’s not that just to get up if he wants to hold you down. So congrats to him.

All in all it was a great experience and well looked after by the One FC crew and had a great time. Not many fighters get to travel and fight internationally on such a stage so I’m always grateful of such opportunities.

One FC: Warriors and Champions

I’ll be making my One FC debut on September 13th on their “Champions & Warriors” card being held in Jakarta, Indonesia. And it wouldn’t be fitting if I wasn’t fighting a champion so I’ve been matched up with BJJ World Champion Almiro Barros fighting out of Evolve MMA. So that would make me the warrior I guess? :)

It’s an exciting matchup and am very excited to fight someone of Barros’ calibre even if this is his MMA debut. Being a World Champion at anything is nothing to be sneezed at so I have been training hard to prepare for a war. But in saying that I’m going in there to make a statement that I am going to be a future force in the flyweight division in One FC.

I have been hindered by physical and mental hurdles in the past, but for the first time in a long time I feel physically great, looking after my body more with better training, better eating and more focus on recovery. Mentally I feel in a much better place than I have been during my last few fights and much happier and relaxed and in the right head space to get through a great productive camp and be more than ready on fight night. Combat 8: 3 – vs. Allan Nascimento

Combat 8: 3 Matchup Poster

To just officially announce on here, my next fight will be at the third Combat 8 show on April 27th to be held at Big Top Luna Park in Sydney. Hopefully will be home court advantage being in Sydney and at Big Top where I’ve fought 8 previous times for CFC before so the surroundings will be familiar. This time though the rules will be different with the Combat 8 rules only allowing a limited time on the ground so there’ll be a lot more action on the feet.

My opponent is Allan Nascimento from Brazil who comes into this fight with a flawless 7 – 0 MMA record and training our of the well known Chute Boxe team. But flawless records don’t phase me much as everyone loses eventually and I aim to be the one to hand him his first loss.

Physically, preparation for this fight has been very good and I’m working on everything I need to to get the win. Mentally, I think I’m positioned much better than my last fight to be in the right frame of mind to win this fight. Last fight you could almost say I was too content and satisfied with everything and almost didn’t care about the result. I guess I wasn’t as hungry. But after losing my last fight and having parts of my life take a blow since then too, I’m more determined than ever to win. I’m hungry. I’m determined. And I’ve got a chip on my shoulder which will translate to me having no thought of self-preservation on my part and will come out for a war and mean my opponent is going to have a very, very hard time in there.

April 27th…. It’s on…

Signed with One Fighting Championship

Posted on | Comments Off

I’m happy to announce that I have signed a multi-fight deal with One Fighting Championship and so my next fight will be early 2013 on one of OneFC’s cards. I’m excited with this opportunity as in a short time, OneFC has grown to be the biggest MMA promotion in Asia with a broadcast deal beaming fights into 500 million homes via ESPN and millions more via their online pay-per-views.

I’m also happy that I will be fighting at my natural weight of Flyweight as there are many more fighters my size in Asia. OneFC are looking to crown a Flyweight champion in 2013 so I hope to be in the mix when that all happens. I wanted 2013 to be a big year in terms of fighting, and this new deal is the start of that.

CFC21 Preparation Update

Posted on | Comments Off

Been quite some time I’ve posted an entry on here. Have been busy with a lot of other stuff earlier in the year, and the training camp for this upcoming fight has kept me busy too, so haven’t had much time to write on here. Thought I’d give a bit of an update on how things were going for my CFC 21 fight while I had a few moments to spare.

A bit over 2 weeks till my fight on may 18th and training camp couldn’t be going any better. All aspects of my game are solid and am confident my skills and all the hard effort from this camp will raise my hand in victory. The last stretch is always the hardest, so I’m still in for a tough time for a bit longer. Hopefully things continue to go as great as they have been, and I notch my 3rd win in a row. Talk again soon!

Allegiance 4: Lord of the Flies

Posted on | Comments Off

It is official. I will be fighting as the main event on Allegiance 4 on October 29th for what will be Australia’s first MMA Flyweight Title. The event will take place at Port Macquarie Panthers and my opponent will be Jarrett ‘Juarez’ Owen from Advance Martial Arts in QLD. Jarrett just came off a very impressive submission win over Mark O’Callaghan who I was scheduled to fight at CFC18 before O’Callaghan pulled out due to injury. So I think it is appropriate that I fight Jarrett for the number 1 spot in Aus at 57kg and lay claim to the title of Lord of the Flies. :) Read more…

Behind the Scenes at CFC 18

A friend of mine did a video of the night’s proceedings from behind the scenes at CFC 18. I think it’s a great video which gives an insight to what happens out back prior to the fight and afterwards for a fighter at a CFC event. I think most people don’t see this kind of stuff so it makes the video all the more interesting. View the video after the jump.  Read more…

CFC 18 Victory

So I won my fight last night at CFC 18 against Mike Lim via guillotine choke 1:35s into the first round. Firstly, I’d like to give big props to Mike who came in as a replacement as my two previous opponents pulled out. Mike showed great heart and really took the fight to me from the get go which surprised me. Fortunately for me, my hard work at training paid off and I was able to defuse the situation and finish the fight. That’s one thing you need for this sport, a big heart, and he definitely has a massive one and will only get better. I had a good chat to Mike after the fight and I wish him all the best in the future. You’re a warrior mate regardless of the result.  Read more…

Fight Diary – It’s Good To Be Nervous

Posted on | Comments Off

I was never really as nervous as I should be before fights. And even when I was, I was thinking about the wrong things so the nerves I did have probably weren’t directly related to the job at hand. And that job was to fight for your life. To go in there for 15 minutes and give it everything I’ve got. There came a time when I took a more relaxed approach and decided to think of the fight like any other sporting competition which I thought would help remove the nerves. But I’ve come to believe that being nervous is a good thing. It switches you on and prepares you for what’s to come. Going into a fight without nerves can lead to complacency and not lack of urgency when you should be scrambling your ass off. It creates a sense of desperation for everything. Read more…
