Form Athletics Team Fight Shorts – MMAHQ

Posted on | Comments Off

The generous guys over at MMAHQ sent me a pair of Form Athletics Fixed Waist Team Fight Shorts to try out and I have to say that they’re some very nice feeling shorts. Material feels very sturdy and durable and would handle quite a lot and despite the toughness in the material they’re still very light shorts.

Normally around $60USD, the guys at MMAHQ ran a deal to get these for $25! Which is super cheap. Check out their site for their daily deals on products with significant discounts. Basically the same as “Deal a Day” sites, but for MMA stuff only!

Interview with MMA Downunder

Posted on | Comments Off

MMA Downunder asked for me for an interview for a fighter profile feature they had for their site. Below is the excerpt of the main interview. Thanks MMA Downunder for doing the feature on me.

1) Where are you originally from and where did you grow up?

- I was born in Vietnam and my family moved to Australia as refugees when I was one. I grew up in the eastern suburbs of Sydney but pretty much spent most of my life living in the western suburbs of Sydney.

2) Why did you first get into martial arts and how old were you?
- My first exposure to martial arts was when I was 15 yrs old (which is 17 yrs ago – man i’m an old fart. haha). I did Wushu which is basically Chinese Kung Fu. The story behind that was that back in the 90s I was a huge Jet Li fan and I had a friend who knew a Master who actually trained with Jet Li back in China and were friends, so that basically got me to do it. I only did it for two years though. Fast forward to 2006 and that’s when I started my first BJJ class which was when the real path to MMA started. So you can say I was a late bloomer. :) Read more…

CFC 18 Victory

So I won my fight last night at CFC 18 against Mike Lim via guillotine choke 1:35s into the first round. Firstly, I’d like to give big props to Mike who came in as a replacement as my two previous opponents pulled out. Mike showed great heart and really took the fight to me from the get go which surprised me. Fortunately for me, my hard work at training paid off and I was able to defuse the situation and finish the fight. That’s one thing you need for this sport, a big heart, and he definitely has a massive one and will only get better. I had a good chat to Mike after the fight and I wish him all the best in the future. You’re a warrior mate regardless of the result.  Read more…

Fight Diary – Motivation: Dig Deep

Posted on | 2 Comments

So normally about 8 weeks out from a fight is when the proper preparation for a fight for me begins. We’re still about 4 weeks away till fight day – so virtually only halfway there. So with all the intense and hard training sessions I’ve had to go through so far, there’s still a lot more to go and the challenge is always trying to find the motivation to get my ass to training. But not only just showing up, but putting in a solid session each and every time. It’s definitely tough because the sessions are never easy. We train pretty hard and sometimes the thought of what I’m in for when i wake up in the morning is almost enough to convince me not to get out of bed.

So how do I get the motivation to get my ass to training? To put in a solid session each time? To not give up when it hurts? To tell myself to keep going when I think I can’t? Read more…

While I was editing some training videos for my own educational purposes, I ended up getting carried away and ended up making a promo video (I get distracted quite easily). The song is by The Killers and sounds pretty awesome with the selected footage a pics. Here it is.

ONE Fighting Championship

A new MMA promotion is starting up in Asia called One Fighting Championship and is looking to be the next big thing here in this region for MMA. The promotion is headed by the same director who headed the successful Martial Combat promotion out of Singapore most recently. ONE FC will also be based out of Singapore for its first show set to go on September 3rd and has been themed to be matching Champions vs Champions – which sounds like it’ll be a huge and exciting first show. CFC 18 – Here cometh the Flyweights…

Posted on | Comments Off

After about a period of 4 months on the sidelines due to injuries and my last fight almost 9 months ago, my next appearance in the cage will be on August 26th at CFC 18 in Sydney. My opponent is scheduled to be Mark O’Callaghan from South Australia and the agreed fightweight will be at 58kg. Like myself, O’Callaghan has had to fight above his weight in most of his fights so this lighter weight fight will be good for the both of us. It will be a chance for both of us to showcase out skills and not be concerned about a bigger and heavier opponent. I think this formula alone will lead to a very fast paced and exciting fight. The UFC has brought in the lighter weight classes with exciting results, and I think the CFC bringing this fight in will result in an exciting fight as well. Read more…

CFC 16

Posted on | Comments Off

CFC 16 happened on Friday and was a great start to the CFC year. It was a much anticipated show for a couple reasons. Firstly, we hadn’t seen any CFC action since last October, and also because 5 of the fellas were fighting.

We ended up getting 4 out of 5 wins, with the loss coming by points decision for Alex, but the fight itself was easily the fight of the night. It was pretty much a standup war between the two. Chris Patterson started us off with a 1st round TKO win dropping his opponent with a nice elbow. Before that he landed a lot of good knees which hurt his opponent. Charlie Sukkar pulled off a first round armbar from the bottom. Was picked up and slammed a couple times, but he never let of the arm and the other guy eventually had to tap.  Josh Payne came away with a nice triangle/armbar combination finish in the first round as well. He too was not scared of the slam. :) And finally, as usual, Hector who is ex-Lion’s Den and now ATT, finished his opponent with some nasty elbows which cut his opponent open, and the doctor had to stop the fight.
