Fuji Sports Aus

Very happy to announce I have some new sponsors and have been selected to be a part of the Fuji Sports Australia Fight Team for 2014. Ever since I got back into BJJ competition last year I’ve been wearing Fuji gear so was already a fan of the brand. Now to be sponsored by them and have their support as I dive deeper into competition in 2014 both here in Australia and Internationally feels great.

Eternal MMA – Feb 21st 2014

Posted on | Comments Off

I will be going up a weight class in my next fight which will be on Feb 21st on the Gold Coast, QLD Australia on Eternal MMA against Reece McClaren of Kachi MMA. I was offered this fight with a couple weeks notice back in October last year which I tentatively accepted but due to contract commitments could not go through with the fight. When I was offered the same fight again, this time with a bit more notice too, I thought why the hell not. Having come back from training overseas for a few weeks I was in decent shape to get straight into camp to prepare for this fight. Read more…

BJJ Black Belt

So I was awarded my BJJ Black Belt a week ago and being such a monumental milestone I have been meaning to take the time to write some words of thanks and reflection but haven’t had much time due to wrapping up work for the year and preparing to head overseas. So I’ve got a few hours left before flying out so now’s my chance…

To say I was surprised to have been awarded my black belt that night is an understatement. I personally didn’t think I was ready as in my head there was so much that I wanted to work on and perfect. Having planned the year ahead with competitions and travel for training and outlining somewhat of a path of what I wanted to do before getting my black belt – so didn’t think I was ready. But like most of my life I’ve always been one to keep working on things, trying to improve wherever possible, striving for perfection and never settling on where I’m at. And if that’s how I naturally am then I don’t think I would ever have been “ready” for a black belt. Read more…

One FC: Warriors and Champions

I’ll be making my One FC debut on September 13th on their “Champions & Warriors” card being held in Jakarta, Indonesia. And it wouldn’t be fitting if I wasn’t fighting a champion so I’ve been matched up with BJJ World Champion Almiro Barros fighting out of Evolve MMA. So that would make me the warrior I guess? :)

It’s an exciting matchup and am very excited to fight someone of Barros’ calibre even if this is his MMA debut. Being a World Champion at anything is nothing to be sneezed at so I have been training hard to prepare for a war. But in saying that I’m going in there to make a statement that I am going to be a future force in the flyweight division in One FC.

I have been hindered by physical and mental hurdles in the past, but for the first time in a long time I feel physically great, looking after my body more with better training, better eating and more focus on recovery. Mentally I feel in a much better place than I have been during my last few fights and much happier and relaxed and in the right head space to get through a great productive camp and be more than ready on fight night. Cabra Kai Mixed Martial Arts

Cabra Kai Den Roll

So an idea which was embarked on about 10 months ago and a journey which started about 8 years ago I’m proud to say that my own little gym is up and running – Cabra Kai Mixed Martial Arts. It’s not the grandest of places. It’s not the biggest of places. It’s not the most complete of places. But it’s a place that I can call my own and is built from the ground up with the passion, sweat, tears, pain, happiness, friendships, relationships, shortcomings, victories and love for the art and sport. Basically everything that captures my journey, and in many ways… life.

To say that my dream a long time ago was to own and run an MMA gym/business would be lying. The idea and the want and need for it kind of evolved over time. When I started my MMA journey many, many years ago, I didn’t know where I would end up. I didn’t even know how long it would last. As time went on I became more and more passionate about it and followed my heart like most things I did in life. And though there have been many times I’ve used the same instinct and followed my heart and things didn’t turn out the way I wanted, I’m thankful this is one thing that did work out. Read more…

MMA Corner Article – Kian Pham: The White Collar Fighter

MMA Corner did a great article based on an interview leading up to my Combat 8 fight. Article and link below…

MMA-Corner

The connotation of a fighter who competes professionally rarely goes hand in hand with a white-collar day job.

For Kian Pham, however, it’s a reality. When he’s not fighting, he’s busy with his career as an Information Technology professional for a globally recognized company that he represents across the Asia-Pacific region.

“I try to keep my job separate to my fighting. I don’t think many of the people I work with are really that familiar with the sport, so it has worked well so far,” Pham revealed in an exclusive interview with The MMA Corner. Read more…

Combat 8: 3 – vs. Allan Nascimento

Combat 8: 3 Matchup Poster

To just officially announce on here, my next fight will be at the third Combat 8 show on April 27th to be held at Big Top Luna Park in Sydney. Hopefully will be home court advantage being in Sydney and at Big Top where I’ve fought 8 previous times for CFC before so the surroundings will be familiar. This time though the rules will be different with the Combat 8 rules only allowing a limited time on the ground so there’ll be a lot more action on the feet.

My opponent is Allan Nascimento from Brazil who comes into this fight with a flawless 7 – 0 MMA record and training our of the well known Chute Boxe team. But flawless records don’t phase me much as everyone loses eventually and I aim to be the one to hand him his first loss.

Physically, preparation for this fight has been very good and I’m working on everything I need to to get the win. Mentally, I think I’m positioned much better than my last fight to be in the right frame of mind to win this fight. Last fight you could almost say I was too content and satisfied with everything and almost didn’t care about the result. I guess I wasn’t as hungry. But after losing my last fight and having parts of my life take a blow since then too, I’m more determined than ever to win. I’m hungry. I’m determined. And I’ve got a chip on my shoulder which will translate to me having no thought of self-preservation on my part and will come out for a war and mean my opponent is going to have a very, very hard time in there.

April 27th…. It’s on…

Decided to drop everything and head overseas to train for a bit and ended up at Tiger Muay Thai in Phuket for a couple weeks. Was tossing up between TMT and Phuket Top Team and though TMT is a bit more expensive, you get what you pay for and was happy with my choice. Whole facility is much bigger and spacious, the indoor MMA/grappling room was pretty slick and the training was pretty good too.  Read more…

Signed with One Fighting Championship

Posted on | Comments Off

I’m happy to announce that I have signed a multi-fight deal with One Fighting Championship and so my next fight will be early 2013 on one of OneFC’s cards. I’m excited with this opportunity as in a short time, OneFC has grown to be the biggest MMA promotion in Asia with a broadcast deal beaming fights into 500 million homes via ESPN and millions more via their online pay-per-views.

I’m also happy that I will be fighting at my natural weight of Flyweight as there are many more fighters my size in Asia. OneFC are looking to crown a Flyweight champion in 2013 so I hope to be in the mix when that all happens. I wanted 2013 to be a big year in terms of fighting, and this new deal is the start of that.

Essential Knowledge When Starting Out In BJJ

Found this pic on the net and every word rings true about BJJ. If you can accept a lot of this when starting out as a white belt in BJJ then you will have a much better chance at succeeding in it. Becoming a good grappler takes years and years of work and as the picture says, takes a lot of mistakes and failures, but to come out at the end of the tunnel is truly a rewarding feeling and that is why BJJ is one of the best forms of martial arts there is.
