Cabra Kai Mixed Martial Arts

So an idea which was embarked on about 10 months ago and a journey which started about 8 years ago I’m proud to say that my own little gym is up and running – Cabra Kai Mixed Martial Arts. It’s not the grandest of places. It’s not the biggest of places. It’s not the most complete of places. But it’s a place that I can call my own and is built from the ground up with the passion, sweat, tears, pain, happiness, friendships, relationships, shortcomings, victories and love for the art and sport. Basically everything that captures my journey, and in many ways… life.

To say that my dream a long time ago was to own and run an MMA gym/business would be lying. The idea and the want and need for it kind of evolved over time. When I started my MMA journey many, many years ago, I didn’t know where I would end up. I didn’t even know how long it would last. As time went on I became more and more passionate about it and followed my heart like most things I did in life. And though there have been many times I’ve used the same instinct and followed my heart and things didn’t turn out the way I wanted, I’m thankful this is one thing that did work out.

Cabra Kai MMA LogoAs I said it has been 10 months, and it has been a very long and trying 10 months. From the business and planning side of things, I was out of my comfort zone. First aid courses. Instructor accreditation courses. Safety and legal courses. So much paperwork, red tape, inspections, regulations, rules, laws, permission this, approval that… It was a very challenging process. I felt very alone at times in it all, sometimes questioning if I should persevere, but thankfully I had great family and friends to help encourage me along the way. Even just a lot of the moral support helped me over the line.

What a lot of people don’t know about me is I’ve had anxiety issues since I was a kid and I still have issues with anxiety from time to time. However in recent years I found that being in the gym whether it be training or coaching helped a lot with that. So that was one of many reasons that triggered this move which allows me to be around things more. I’m glad that I have a place where I can feel relaxed and calm yet also share my knowledge and experience with others as a coach and mentor not only in martial arts but hopefully in some ways, in life just like my coaches before me also did.

KP & LukeAnd in saying that I must thank my current coach and friend Luke Pezzutti who had a massive part in all this too. He too also had a part in planting the idea of running a gym a while back and has supported and mentored me along the way. I can honestly say that a lot of my philosophies and style of teaching comes from him and definitely a lot of my knowledge. But I would thank all the people who I have met and come across in my time in MMA. From other fighters, to fans, to friends. I have met and befriended some amazing people and every single person would have had input into all of this.

Well the journey has just begun. As I now balance my fighting and training with my coaching and teaching and then try and fit in a social life it should be a challenging experience, but I’m sure it will be rewarding in the end.
