It’s "Mixed Martial Arts" people!

I am quite often introduced to friend’s friends as a “Cage Fighter” and the uneducated media in Australia via their extensive research also refer to the sport I and many others participate in as “Cage Fighting”. So today I would like to clarify to friends and family on the correct terminology.

OK, so read the title of the blog. It’s “Mixed Martial Arts” people. That’s the actual terminology. Not Cage Fighting, not No-Holds Barred fighting. Not Human Cockfighting either (that was the Daily Telegraph’s one. Kudos to them). In short, we call it MMA (once again for the uneducated media out there, that stands for “Mixed Martial Arts”. wow. go figure aye). To save myself explaining, I’ll just quote the definition from wikipedia which is nicely put.

Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) is a full contact combat sport that allows a wide variety of fighting techniques, from a mixture of martial arts striking and grappling techniques, both while standing and on the ground. Such competitions allow martial artists of different backgrounds to compete. (Wikipedia: Mixed Martial Arts)

OK, when they say different backgrounds, they’re not talking about their nationalities either. But it is true that the global growth of the sport has lead this to happen too. =)

The “Cage” is where some fights occur. It’s for the safety of the fighters so they don’t fall out through the ropes if it’s held in a conventional boxing ring. Do we call water polo “pool ball” since it’s held in a pool?

So please, next time people, when speaking of myself or the sport. Please use the correct terminology – Mixed Martial Arts.

Thank you.
